description:
The agency conducted the NLS to analyze the sources of variation in the labor market behavior and experience of mature women, young women, older men, and young men in the U.S. population. This series contains longitudinal social survey data for four cohorts within the U.S. population: mature women, ages 30-44; young women, ages 14-24; older men, ages 45-59; and young men, ages 14-24. The data consists of information gathered at multiple points in time on the labor market experiences of th ese four groups. This information includes current labor force and employment status, work history, characteristics of current or last job, investments in education and training, geographic region and local labor market, influence of parents, marital status and family responsibilities, financial characteristics, work related attitudes and aspirations, and potentially debilitating factors such as health problems and job discrimination. The young women and young men surveys also include data taken from separately conducted high school and college surveys. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth files contain longitudinal data from a cohort of young men and women aged between 14 and 22 in 1979. From 1966 through about 1986, primary funding support for the NLS ca me from the Employment and Training Administration and its predecessor, the Manpower Administration. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
