description:
The agency developed MAS / MILS to systematically measure and classify identified domestic and foreign mineral resources according to their respective extraction technologies, economics, and availability. MAS / MILS also provided for the systematic storage, timely update, and rapid retrieval of comprehensive information on mining operations, mineral deposits / occurrences and processing plants throughout the world. This series consists of data from two inter-related minerals data systems, the Minerals Availability System (MAS) and Minerals Industry Locator System (MILS). The file contains data on more than 200,000 mineral locations and processing plants in the U.S. and foreign countries. Information includes mineral deposit identification information, state and county location, and some deposit definition data for all known mineral locations in the U.S. plus those few locations worldwide with accessible data. There are up to 38 records for each deposit with information including its name, political location, Universal Transverse Mercator location, topography, river basin, mineral holding, reference data, plant type and identification, Public Land Survey System location, commodity, additional or alternate names, owner name, ownership, bibliography, type of ore body, mode of origin, shape of ore body, ore controls, first and second geometry groups, history of production, first and second lithology group, first and second minerals group, geologic age, and reserves data. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
