description:
This CD-ROM includes micro data files and related documentation based on the 1997 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) questionnaire. Also included is the SETS software needed to access and tabulate the data. The NHIS is a continuing nationwide survey of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. The purpose of the NHIS is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the kinds of health services people receive. Information is obtained on the number of restricted-activity days, bed days, work- or school-loss days, and all physician visits occurring during the 2-week period prior to the week of the interview. Data are also o btained on the acute and chronic conditions that were responsible for these days or visits. Respondents are asked about long-term limitation of activity and the chronic conditions related to this disability. All conditions are coded according to the Health Interview Survey Medical Coding Manual and Short Index, a modified version of the International Classification of Diseases, using the limited diagnostic detail available from a household respondent. Data are obtained on all hospital episodes during the prior 12 months, including length of stay and whether surgery was performed. Topics included from the basic module are: Household, Family, Person, Sample Adult, Sample Child, Immunization, Injury Episode, Injury Verbatim, and Poison Episode. All of the files on this CD contain updated material through September 2003.
