Nicotiana tabacum is an allotetraploid generated after an interspecific hybridization between Nicotiana sylvestris and a member of the section Tomentosae. These provide, respectively, the S-genome component and the T-genome component. The effort to develop the syntenic relationships, if any, between tetraploid tobacco and the diploid progenitors has been pursued because of the bread wheat experience. N. sylvestris accessions exhibit extremely low polymorphism rendering the effort to develop a linkage map in this diploid progenitor impossible. Nicotiana acuminata is a close relative of N. sylvestris and the polymorphism present in the germplasm was exploited to develop a genetic map of one of the diploid progenitors.
