In Zimbabwe, broad-based behaviour change communications and better social support mechanisms are required to prevent and mitigate the effects of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) and its effects. At the same time, services for survivors of sexual assault, particularly those outside major urban areas are needed. PSI Zimbabwe, in collaboration with partners such as Adult Rape Clinic, Family Support Trust and SAfAIDS, is introducing a comprehensive package of services for survivors of sexual violence. The package will include counselling, HIV testing and counselling, post-exposure prophylaxis, emergency contraception, screening for sexually transmitted infections, treatment, medical examination and collection of forensic evidence and referral for legal and other services. The DfID-funded VAWG program in Zimbabwe will therefore be executed as a major component of the broader Sexual and Reproductive Health program, which started in 2010 and will be ending in 2015. Through a broad communication strategy, the new intervention seeks to raise awareness on VAWG and related support and treatment services, leveraging on existing PSI-owned and partner infrastructure. The strategy will use carefully designed materials, which were pretested in this study. The objectives of the study were to (1) Examine audience comprehension of messages (2) Explore audience likes/dislikes (3) Evaluate audiences emotional reaction to the messages (4) Evaluate the credibility, relevance and appropriateness of message content (5) Determine audiences preferred changes to the adverts (6) Determine if the message would persuade the target audience to seek support and services for VAWG. The study was conducted among men and women aged 18 - 49 years residing in Harare, Bulawayo, Matabeleland South, Mashonaland West and Midlands Provinces. This sample was split by rural and urban areas. A total of 16 executions, in all three major languages spoken in Zimbabwe were pretested, twelve of them were print/press adverts while four were audio/radio adverts.
