description:
This survey provides expenditures by households, as well as their budgets for the year, including all expenditures, income, and changes in assets and debts. Topics include: composition of households, characteristics of dwelling, shelter expenses, furnishings and equipment, running the home, food and alcohol, clothing, medical and health care, travel and transportation, recreation and education, tobacco and miscellaneous expenses. This public use microdata tape is the fourth available using Canadian Family Expenditure Survey data. The survey was carried out in February and March 1987 and refers to calendar year 1986. The Survey of Family Expenditure of 1986 is the first since 1984. The 1986 was designed to provide information for families and unattached individuals (spending units) living in private households in the ten provinces of Canada as well as Whitehorse and Yellowknife. In contrast, the coverage of the 1984 survey only included 17 major cities in Canada. For confidentiality reasons, data from Charlottetown and Summerside were excluded from the 1984 file. Users should note that data on detailed food expenditure for 1986 were collected in a separate survey (see Statistics Canada Catalogue Number 62-554). The Food Survey had the same coverage as the Family Expenditure Survey of 1986.
