description:
The Scottish Health Survey series was established as a result of the publication in 1992 of Scotland's health: a challenge to us all. The first survey in the series, in 1995 (SN 3807) was commissioned by the then Scottish Office Department of Health. The second (SN 4379) and third (SN 5318) in the series were carried out in 1998 and 2003, respectively. From 2008 and until 2011, the survey will be carried out continuously, with each year’s data deposited separately. The majority of the questionnaire will be the same in every year, with a smaller number of topics included in two o f the four years (2008 and 2010, or 2009 and 2011). Although it was not designed to provide sub-national regional data on an annual basis, regional analysis will be possible for all Health Board areas after four years (and sooner for some of the larger Boards). The aims of the series are: to provide data about the nation's health to estimate the prevalence of particular health conditions to estimate the prevalence of risk factors associated with these conditions to examine differences between population subgroups; and between Scotland and England to contribute towards monitoring progress towards selected health targets to monitor trends in the population's health over time
