description:
The HOSTIL unit contains the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale from the MMPI. The Hostility Scale is a subscale of the MMPI which measures a person's ability to get along with others. The 50 item scale is an individual's self description, those scoring high tending to have little confidence in their fellow man, seeing people as ugly, dishonest, unsocial and immoral and believing that people should be made to suffer for their sins. Items were selected for the Hostility Scale according to their ability to discriminate those scoring low on the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory, a measure of teacher/pupil rapport in a classroom. In CAPS/87 the hostile unit was not administered separately from the MMPI, but can be constructed from MMPI items. In CAPS/84 the unit also contains the Marlow-Crown social desirability scale. In CAPS/86 the HOSTIL unit was also administered to the respondent's best same-sex, on-campus friend (unit name FHOSTIL). See codebook for additional information
