Progression through chondrogenesis is driven by interaction with the microenvironment. Cells respond to changes in the microenvironment by altering their transcriptome. The mechanisms connecting environmental cues to chromatin and signaling factors involved in early epigenomic remodeling are poorly understood. We here study the role of the early growth factor response gene EGR1 and its interaction with Polycomb Group epigenetic regulators in chondrogenesis. Chondrogenic differentiation was induced in ATDC5 cells in the absence (RNAi) or presence of EGR1; RNA samples for microarray gene expression profiling were collected at t=0, 2, 4.5, 8,16, 24, 72 hrs post-induction of differentiation.
